Exploring the gender gap in doctors’ earnings: Time isn’t always money in primary care

Female primary care physicians earn less than males. Why? A study says it’s because they conduct fewer patient visits, despite spending more time per visit, per day, and per year on direct patient care than their counterparts. Longer visits and strong patient/clinician relationships are better for patient outcomes and help prevent clinician burnout. The gender pay gap is yet another reason that the fee-for-service payment structure that prioritizes visit volume has to go.
