Racism and public health

Updated: Apr 18, 2023

Christine Bechtel, co-founder of 3rd Conversation and X4 Health, was recently interviewed on the In Black America podcast by producer/host John L. Hanson, Jr.

Bechtel and Dr. Rebecca Etz, PhD, co-director of The Larry Green Center and associate professor of Family Medicine and Population Health at Virginia Commonwealth University, discussed the results of a recent survey that revealed 86% of primary care patients believe racism is impacting their physical, psychological and/or emotional health, what needs to occur to ensure the survival of primary care, and other topics.

"I was surprised by the fact that almost 9 in 10 Americans understand that racism is a public health issue, period. We also asked if they think structural racism should be a concern of public health, and more than a quarter said yes. Those numbers tell me, as a patient advocate, that the health care system has a moral imperative to respond."
